An Arabi came in to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Have you ever been seized by Umm Mildam?"He replied, "What is Umm Mildam?"The Prophet ﷺ said, "A fever that settles between the skin and the flesh."The man said, "I have never experienced that."The Prophet ﷺ then asked, "Have you ever suffered a headache?"He replied, "What is a headache?"The Prophet ﷺ said, "Throbbing veins that pulse in a person's head."The man said, "I have never experienced that either."When the man turned to leave, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever wishes to look at a man from the people of the Fire, let him look at this one."
Imam Ahmad (8395) and Bazzar (778 - Kashf) both narrated it via Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqama, who said, "Abu Salama narrated to us, from Abu Hurairah," and he related the hadith. Its chain of transmission is hasan, because of Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqama, for his hadith is hasan.Ibn Hibban (2916) and Hakim (1/347) graded it sahih, and Hakim said, "It meets the conditions of Muslim."Regarding the meaning of the hadith, Hafiz bin Habban said, "His saying ﷺ, 'Whoever wishes to look at a man from the people of the Fire, let him look at this one,' is a statement informing about something, the intent of which is to deter one from relying on that thing, and from lacking patience toward its opposite. That is because Allah made illnesses in this world, griefs, and sorrows a means of expiating sins for the Muslims. So he ﷺ intended to inform his nation that a person can hardly avoid falling into what Allah has forbidden during his days and nights, which entails the Fire for him unless Allah graciously forgives him. So it is as if every person is bound by what his own hands have earned, and illnesses expiate some of that for him in this world, not that whoever is spared illness in this world is among the people of the Fire."I say, what Ibn Hibban mentioned is sound in general, but as for this particular man, perhaps the Prophet ﷺ had come to know of things in him that entailed the Fire for him. And Allah knows best.As for what is narrated from Anas as a marfu hadith similar to this, with the addition, "Take him out from before me," it is daif. Tabarani narrated it in Awsat (5905), and it contains Hasan bin Abu Jafar Jufri, whom the majority of scholars of knowledge consider daif. Hafiz said, "His hadith is daif, despite his devotion and virtue."
