We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to visit him during his illness, along with a group of women. We saw a waterskin hanging above him, dripping water onto him to ease the intense heat of his fever.We said, "Messenger of Allah, if only you would call upon Allah to heal you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Among the people most severely tested are the prophets, then those who follow them, then those who follow them."
أتينا رسول الله ﷺ نعوده في نساء، فإذا سقاء معلق نحوه، يقطر ماؤه عليه من شدة ما يجد من حر الحمى، قلنا: يا رسول الله! لو دعوت الله فشفاك. فقال رسول الله ﷺ: إن من أشد الناس بلاء الأنبياء، ثم الذين يلونهم، ثم الذين يلونهم.
Imam Ahmad (27079) and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (24/245) both narrated it through the route of Shuba, from Husayn bin Abdul-Rahman, who said, "I heard Abu Ubayda bin Huzaifa narrating from his paternal aunt Fatimah," and then he related the hadith. Hakim also narrated it (4/404) through this same route, and the men of its chain are trustworthy, except for Abu Ubayda bin Huzaifa, who is known by his kunya and has no given name, as Abu Hatim stated. A number of narrators transmitted from him, Ibn Hibban and Ajli both deemed him trustworthy, and Haythami graded his hadith hasan in Al-Majmu (2/292), finding no criticism of him. As for Hafiz, he described him as "acceptable," meaning if corroborated. However, I have not found any corroborating narration for him, though his hadith may still be graded hasan on account of its being well known and having supporting evidence.
