The Prophet ﷺ passed by a woman who was weeping at a grave and said to her, "Fear Allah and be patient."She replied, "Get away from me. You have not been struck by a calamity like mine."She did not recognize him. Then she was told, "That was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."She went to the Prophet ﷺ and found no doorkeepers at his place. She said, "I did not recognize you."He said, "True patience is at the first shock."
مر النبي ﷺ بامرأة تبكي عند قبر فقال: اتقي الله واصبري. قالت: إليك عني، فإنك لم تصب بمصيبتي. ولم تعرفه. فقيل لها: إنه رسول الله ﷺ. فأتت النبي ﷺ فلم تجد عنده بوابين، فقالت: لم أعرفك. فقال: إنما الصبر عند الصدمة الأولى.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Funerals (1283) and Muslim in the Book of Funerals (926), both from the hadith of Shuba, from Thabit Bunani, from Anas bin Malik, and he mentioned it likewise.In the same meaning is what was related from Abu Hurairah as a marfu report, "Patience is at the first shock." Bazzar related it (791, Kashf), from Ahmad bin Mansur, who said, Fahd bin Hayan narrated to us, who said, Imran narrated to us, from Muhammad, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it likewise. Bazzar said, "We do not know it from Abu Hurairah except by this route."I say, in it is Fahd bin Hayan, Abu Zayd, from the people of Basra, upon whose weakness the scholars have agreed. Ibn Hibban said, "He was among those who erred until he brought inverted hadiths, and he fell outside the bounds of being cited as evidence when that became frequent." Al-Majruhin (868).As for Bazzar's statement, "We do not know it from Abu Hurairah except by this route," he said that according to his own knowledge. Otherwise, this hadith has also been related by another route. Abu Yaala related it (6141, Athari) through Abu Ubayda Naji, who said, Ibn Sirin narrated to us, from Abu Hurairah, within a long story, in which it says, "Patience is at the first shock, patience is at the first shock."Abu Ubayda Naji is Bakr bin Aswad, from the people of Basra. Yahya bin Kathir used to narrate from him while saying, "He is a liar." Ibn Main declared him daif, and Ibn Hibban said, "Abu Ubayda was a righteous man, and he was of the kind I mentioned, those overtaken by asceticism to the point that they became heedless of preserving hadith carefully, so what predominated in his hadith were problematic reports." See Al-Majruhin (149).In the same meaning also is what was related from Ibn Abbas as a marfu report, "Patience is at the first shock." Bazzar related it (792, Kashf) through Muhammad bin Umar bin Waqid, who said, Ibrahim bin Ismail narrated to us, from Dawud bin Husayn, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it likewise. Bazzar said, "Ikrima alone related it from Ibn Abbas, and in it is Waqidi." Haythami said in Al-Majma (3/3), "In it is Waqidi, about whom there is much discussion, though he has been deemed reliable."
