The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one is struck by a calamity and says, as Allah has commanded, 'Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return' [Baqarah 2:156], 'O Allah, reward me in my calamity and grant me something better in its place,' except that Allah does that for him."Umm Salama said, "When Abu Salama died, I said those words. Then I said, 'Who could be better than Abu Salama?' But Allah granted me in his place the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who married me."In another narration, "No Muslim is struck by a calamity and says what Allah has commanded him to say, 'Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return' [Baqarah 2:156], 'O Allah, reward me in my calamity and grant me a replacement better than it,' except that Allah grants him something better in its place."She said, "When Abu Salama died, I said, 'Which of the Muslims is better than Abu Salama? His was the first household to emigrate to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' Then I said those words, and Allah granted me in his place the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Hatib bin Abu Balta to me to propose marriage on his behalf. I said, 'I have a daughter, and I am a jealous woman.'He replied, 'As for her daughter, we will pray to Allah to make her independent of her, and I will pray to Allah to remove the jealousy.'"
Malik narrated it in the chapter on funerals (42) from Rabia bin Abu Abdul-Rahman, from Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, and he related it as mentioned. The second narration was related by Muslim in the chapter on funerals (918) through several routes from Ismail bin Jafar, who said, Saad bin Saeed informed me, from Umar bin Kathir bin Aflah, from Ibn Safina, from Umm Salama, and he related it as mentioned. It has also been narrated from Abu Salama that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "There is no Muslim who is struck by a calamity and turns to what Allah has commanded, saying, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return" [Baqarah 2:156]. O Allah, with You I place my hope for reward in my calamity, so grant me reward for it, and compensate me for it, without Allah rewarding him for it and compensating him with something better than it."Ibn Majah narrated this (1598) from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, Yazid bin Harun told us, who said, Abdul-Malik bin Qudama Jumahi informed us, from his father, from Umar bin Abu Salama, from his mother Umm Salama, from Abu Salama, who related the same. Abdul-Malik bin Qudama is daif, and his father Qudama is "acceptable," because he has corroborating narrations, though some confusion occurred regarding it.This is what Tirmidhi (3511) and Ahmad (16343) both narrated through Hammad bin Salama, from Thabit, from Umar bin Abu Salama, from his mother Umm Salama, from Abu Salama, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a calamity befalls any of you, let him say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return" [Baqarah 2:156]. O Allah, with You I place my hope for reward in my calamity, so grant me reward for it, and give me something better in its place." When Abu Salama was on his deathbed, he said, "O Allah, grant my family someone better than me in my place." When he passed away, Umm Salama said, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return" [Baqarah 2:156]. With Allah I place my hope for reward in my calamity, so grant me reward for it.Tirmidhi said, "This hadith is unusual by this route, and it has been narrated by another route from Umm Salama. Abu Salama's name was Abdullah bin Abdul-Asad."Imam Ahmad narrated it in abbreviated form, except that he added between Thabit and Umar bin Abu Salama the name Ibn Umar bin Abu Salama. Nasai likewise narrated it in that manner in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla (1072). Ibn Umar bin Abu Salama's name was Muhammad. Al-Hafiz mentioned him in Taqrib and said of him, "Acceptable," meaning when corroborated, otherwise his hadith is weak.Imam Ahmad (16344) also narrated it through another route from Muttalib, from Umm Salama, who said, "Abu Salama came to me one day from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'I heard a statement from the Messenger of Allah that pleased me greatly.' He said, 'No calamity befalls any Muslim, after which he says the words of returning to Allah at the time of his calamity, and then says, "O Allah, grant me reward in my calamity, and give me something better in its place," without that being granted to him.'"Umm Salama said, "So I memorized that from him. When Abu Salama passed away, I said the words of returning to Allah, and said, 'O Allah, grant me reward in my calamity, and give me something better in his place.' Then I reflected to myself and said, 'From where could I get someone better than Abu Salama?!' When my waiting period ended, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought permission to visit me while I was tanning a hide of mine. I washed my hands of the tanning bark and gave him permission. I placed for him a leather cushion stuffed with palm fiber, and he sat on it. He then proposed marriage to me. When he finished speaking, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, it is not that I lack desire for you, but I am a woman of intense jealousy, and I fear you might see something from me for which Allah would punish me. I am also a woman who has grown old in years, and I have children to care for.'"He said, "As for the jealousy you mentioned, Allah will remove it from you. As for the age you mentioned, the same has befallen me as has befallen you. And as for the children you mentioned, your children are my children."She said, "So I submitted myself to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then married her, and Umm Salama said, "Allah has indeed given me, in place of Abu Salama, someone better than him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Muttalib is the son of Abdullah bin Hantab. His narrations from the companions are disconnected (mursal), except from Anas bin Malik and those of his generation.I believe that because of this discrepancy, Tirmidhi did not grade the hadith of Abu Salama as sahih, but only indicated that the hadith was narrated by another route from Umm Salama, because the sound and established fact is that this hadith belongs to the musnad of Umm Salama, as has already been shown. And Allah knows best.
