Sulayk al-Ghatafani came while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering the sermon. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Have you prayed anything?"He replied, "No."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Pray two short rakahs."
جاء سليك الغطفاني ورسول الله ﷺ يخطب فقال له: صليت شيئا؟ قال: لا. قال: صل ركعتين وتجوز فيهما.
Abu Dawud (1116) and Ibn Majah (1114) both narrated it via Hafs bin Ghiyath, from Amash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah. And from Amash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir. He then related the hadith. The wording given is that of Abu Dawud, while the wording of Ibn Majah is, "Did you pray before coming?" and he related it.Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (2500), narrating it via Hafs bin Ghiyath with the same chain. He said, "Hafs bin Ghiyath narrated it alone, and he is the judge of Kufa."I say, Hafs bin Ghiyath is among the trustworthy narrators found in the two Sahihs, so his being the sole narrator does no harm. As for the chain of Amash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir, it is found in Sahih Muslim as mentioned earlier, and Ibn Khuzayma (1835) also recorded it through this same chain.
