Abu Saeed Khudri entered the mosque one Friday while Marwan was delivering the sermon, and he stood up to pray. The guards came to make him sit down, but he refused until he had completed his prayer.When he finished, we approached him and said, "May Allah have mercy on you. They nearly assaulted you."He replied, "I was not going to abandon this after something I saw from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He then recounted that a man came one Friday in shabby clothing while the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Friday sermon, and the Prophet ﷺ instructed him to pray two rakahs while he continued the sermon.Wazad added in another narration, The Prophet ﷺ urged the people to give charity, so they threw down some garments, and he gave the man two of them. The following Friday, the man came again while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering the sermon, and the Prophet urged the people to give charity. The man threw down one of his two garments.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This man came last Friday in shabby clothing, so I urged the people to give charity, and they threw down some garments. I ordered that two of them be given to him. Now he has come back, and when I urged the people to give charity, he threw down one of them!"He rebuked him and said, "Take your garment."
أن أبا سعيد الخدري دخل يوم الجمعة ومروان يخطب، فقام يصلي، فجاء الحرس ليجلسوه فأبى حتى صلى، فلما انصرف أتيناه فقلنا: رحمك الله! إن كادوا ليقعوا بك. فقال: ما كنت لأتركها بعد شيء رأيته من رسول الله ﷺ. ثم ذكر أن رجلا جاء يوم الجمعة في هيئة بدة، والنبي ﷺ يخطب يوم الجمعة، فأمره فصلى ركعتين، والنبي ﷺ يخطب. وزاد في رواية: وحث الناس على الصدقة، فألقوا ثيابا، فأعطاه منها ثوبين، فلما كانت الجمعة الثانية جاء ورسول الله ﷺ يخطب، فحث الناس على الصدقة. قال: فألقى أحد ثوبيه. فقال رسول الله ﷺ: جاء هذا يوم الجمعة بهيئة بذة، فأمرت الناس بالصدقة، فألقوا ثيابا فأمرت له منها بثوبين، ثم جاء الآن، فأمرت الناس بالصدقة فألقى أحدهما! فانتهره وقال: خذ ثوبك.
Abu Dawud (1675), Tirmidhi (511), Nasai (1408), and Ibn Majah (1113) all narrated it through the route of Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Ibn Ajlan, from Iyad bin Abdullah, from Abu Saeed, and he related the hadith. The wording given is that of Tirmidhi. As for Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah, they abridged it. As for Nasai, he did not mention the incident of Abu Saeed being present while Marwan was delivering the sermon, but he added the addition mentioned above in his version.Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ajlan Madani, for he is "truthful." Tirmidhi said, "A hasan sahih hadith." Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih (1799), narrating it through this same route.His saying, "in a shabby appearance," with the letter ba vowelled with fatha, means a poor, worn-out appearance.A note. Some students of knowledge asked me, is it permissible for the imam, during the sermon, to order someone who has entered the masjid and sat down without praying the greeting of the masjid to stand up and pray two units of prayer?The answer. The Prophet's ﷺ ruling for one who entered the masjid, that he should pray two units of prayer before sitting down, was a matter of legislation, for his silence constitutes approval, in the absence of his legislating otherwise. As for anyone other than him, he has no right to interrupt the sermon and order everyone who has entered the masjid and sat down to stand up and pray two units of prayer. However, he must remind people to perform the two units of the greeting of the masjid during the sermon, because the greeting of the masjid is an emphasized sunnah.
