A man entered the mosque while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering the Friday sermon.The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Have you prayed?"The man replied, "No."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Stand and pray two rakahs."In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you comes on Friday and the imam has already come out, let him pray two rakahs."In yet another narration, Jabir reported, "Sulayk al-Ghatafani came on Friday while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was seated on the pulpit. Sulayk sat down before praying."The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Did you pray two rakahs?"He replied, "No."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Stand and pray them."In another narration, "Sulayk, stand and pray two rakahs, and make them brief."Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you comes on Friday while the imam is delivering the sermon, let him pray two rakahs and make them brief."
دخل رجل المسجد ورسول الله ﷺ يخطب يوم الجمعة فقال: صليت؟ قال: لا. قال: قم فصل ركعتين. وفي رواية: أن النبي ﷺ قال: إذا جاء أحدكم يوم الجمعة وقد خرج الإمام فليصل ركعتين. وفي رواية أخرى: عن جابر أنه قال: جاء سليك الغطفاني يوم الجمعة ورسول الله ﷺ قاعد على المنبر، فقعد سليك قبل أن يصلي، فقال له النبي ﷺ: أركع ركعتين؟ قال: لا. قال: قم فاركعهما. وفي رواية: يا سليك! قم فاركع ركعتين وتجوز فيهما. ثم قال ﷺ: إذا جاء أحدكم يوم الجمعة والإمام يخطب فليركع ركعتين، وليتجوز فيهما.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Friday Prayer (931) and Muslim in the Book of Friday Prayer (875), both through the route of Amr bin Dinar, from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he related the hadith. The second narration was reported by Muslim through the route of Shubah, from Amr. The third narration was also reported by him through the route of Layth, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir. The fourth narration was also reported by Muslim through the route of Amash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir bin Abdullah.This hadith has also been narrated from Jabir, from Sulayk, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you comes to the Friday prayer while the imam is delivering the sermon, let him pray two light rakahs." This is how Ahmad reported it (15180) from Abdul-Razzaq, who said, Sufyan informed us, from Amash, from Abu Sufyan, from Amash, from Jabir, from Sulayk.Mentioning Sulayk in this chain is a mistake. What is correct is that this hadith belongs to the musnad of Jabir, as reported by the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), not to the musnad of Sulayk. Bukhari pointed to this flaw, saying, "Some of them said, from Jabir, from Sulayk, from the Prophet ﷺ, and it is not sahih." He means, and Allah knows best, that it is not sahih as belonging to the musnad of Sulayk. Rather, it is the story of Sulayk, which Jabir related, and within it he related the saying of the Prophet, from the Prophet ﷺ directly, without an intermediary.I have discussed this matter in detail in Minna Kubra.
