The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to deliver his sermons leaning against a palm trunk. Then a pulpit was made for him, and he delivered his sermons from it. The palm trunk moaned like a longing she-camel, so the Prophet ﷺ came down and touched it, and it fell silent.
أن رسول الله ﷺ خطب إلى لزت جذع، واتخذوا له منبرا، فخطب عليه، فحن الجذع حنين الناقة، فنزل النبي ﷺ فمسه فسكن.
Tirmidhi (3627) narrated it, from Mahmud bin Ghaylan, from Umar bin Yunus, from Ikrima bin Ammar, from Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abu Talha, from Anas bin Malik, and he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan, on account of Ikrima bin Ammar, for he is truthful but prone to error. Tirmidhi said, "A hasan sahih hadith." In another copy it reads, "Hasan sahih gharib from this angle." Tirmidhi narrated it in this abbreviated form, and Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih (1777), narrating it via Muhammad bin Bashshar, from Umar bin Yunus, with the same chain. In it, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to stand on Friday and lean his back against a trunk fixed in the masjid while he delivered the sermon. Then a Roman man came and said, "Shall we not make something for you to sit on, so that it looks as if you are standing?" So he made him a pulpit with two steps, and he would sit on the third. When the Prophet of Allah ﷺ sat on the pulpit, the trunk bellowed like a bull bellows, until the masjid shook with its bellowing out of grief for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came down from the pulpit to it and embraced it while it was still bellowing. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ embraced it, it fell silent. He then said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, had I not embraced it, it would not have stopped doing this until the Hour comes, out of grief for the Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then ordered that it be buried, meaning the trunk.Ibn Hibban also graded it sahih (6507), narrating it via Mubarak bin Fadala, from Hasan, from Anas bin Malik, mentioning something similar. Mubarak bin Fadala is a mudallis and there is disagreement about him, except that Imam Ahmad said, "What he narrates from Hasan may be relied upon." Here he explicitly stated that he heard it directly, so the suspicion of tadlis is removed from him.
