I sat with a man who had been a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, known as Hakam bin Hazn Kilfi, and he began to tell us his story.He said, "I came as part of a delegation to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, either the seventh of seven or the ninth of nine. We entered upon him and said, 'Messenger of Allah, we have come to visit you, so pray to Allah for good on our behalf.'He gave instructions concerning us, or ordered that we be given some dates, for circumstances at that time were modest. We stayed there for several days, during which we attended the Friday prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He stood, leaning on a staff or a bow, praised Allah and extolled Him with brief, pleasant, blessed words, then said, 'People, you will not be able, or you will not do, all that you have been commanded. But aim straight and receive glad tidings.'"
جلست إلى رجل له صحبة من رسول الله ﷺ، يقال له: الحكم بن حزن الكلفي، فأنشأ يحدثنا قال: وفدت إلى رسول الله ﷺ سابع سبعة، أو تاسع تسعة فدخلنا عليه، فقلنا: يا رسول الله! زرناك فادع الله لنا بخير، فأمر بنا، أو أمر لنا بشيء من التمر، والشأن إذ ذاك، دون، فأقمنا بها أياما شهدنا فيها الجمعة مع رسول الله ﷺ فقام متوكنا على عصا، أو قوس، فحمد الله، وأثنى عليه كلمات خفيفات طيبات مباركات، ثم قال: أيها الناس، إنكم لن تطيقوا، أو لن تفعلوا كل ما أمرتم به، ولكن سددوا وأبشروا.
Abu Dawud (1096) reported it from Saeed bin Mansur, who said, Shihab bin Kharash narrated to us, who said, Shuayb bin Razeeq Taifi narrated to me, and he related it. Abu Ali said, I heard Abu Dawud say, "Some of our companions confirmed part of it for me." Its chain is hasan because of Shihab bin Kharash and his teacher Shuayb bin Razeeq, for both are truthful narrators. The hadith was also reported by Imam Ahmad (17856), Ibn Khuzayma (1452), and Bayhaqi (3/206), all of them through various routes from Shihab bin Kharash, with similar wording.Hafiz said in Talkhis, "Its chain is hasan. It contains Shihab bin Kharash, concerning whom there has been disagreement, but most scholars affirmed his reliability, and Ibn Sakan and Ibn Khuzayma both graded it sahih." End of quote.It is also supported by the mursal report of Ataa. Ibn Jurayj said, I asked Ataa, "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stand on a staff when he delivered a sermon?" He said, "Yes, and he would lean on it heavily." Bayhaqi reported it.
