Ibn Saad narrated it in Tabaqat Kubra (1/377) from Abdul-Aziz bin Abdullah Uwaysi and Qutayba bin Saeed, who both said, Abdullah bin Lahia informed us, from Abu Aswad (whose name was Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Nawfal), from Amir bin Abdullah bin Zubayr, from his father, who mentioned it. Its chain is hasan due to the discussion surrounding Ibn Lahia, but Qutayba bin Saeed's narration from him is acceptable.Bazzar also narrated it (2211) through the route of Saeed bin Abu Maryam, Ibn Lahia narrated to us, from Abu Aswad, from Amir bin Abdullah bin Zubayr, from his father, that the Prophet ﷺ used to gesture with a short staff when he delivered a sermon. The wording of Qutayba bin Saeed from Ibn Lahia is the correct one.These hadiths are to be understood as meaning that when the Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon on the ground, he would lean on a staff, a bow, or a person such as Bilal or Usama, but once he took up the pulpit, there was no longer any need to lean on anything, since the pulpit served that same purpose.Hafiz bin Qayyim said, "He never took a sword or anything else in his hand, but rather he used to lean on a bow or a staff before he took up the pulpit."
