Ibn Abbas used to say, "If any of you can manage not to go out on the day of Eid al-Fitr until he has eaten something, let him do so."The narrator said, "Ever since I heard this from Ibn Abbas, I have never failed to eat before going out. I eat a bite from the edge of a thin loaf, or drink some milk or water."I asked, "What is the reason behind this?"He replied, "I think he heard it from the Prophet ﷺ. People used to delay going out until the forenoon was well advanced, so they would say, 'Let us eat something so that we will not be in a hurry to finish our prayer.'"
أنه ابن عباس يقول: إن استطعتم أن لا يغدو أحدكم يوم الفطر حتى يطعم فليفعل. قال: فلم أدع أن آكل قبل أن أغدو منذ سمعت ذلك من ابن عباس فآكل من طرف الصريقة الأكلة، أو أشرب اللبن، أو الماء. قلت: فعلام يؤول هذا؟ قال: سمعه أظن عن النبي ﷺ قال: كانوا لا يخرجون حتى يمتد الضحاء، فيقولون: نطعم لئلا نعجل من صلاتنا.
Ahmad (2866) narrated it from Abdul-Razzaq, who said, Ibn Jurayj informed us, Atta informed me, and he related it.The hadith is also found in Musannaf Abdul-Razzaq (5734), except that there he added the tafsir of the phrase "edge of the sareeqah," saying, We said to him (the speaker being Ibn Jurayj), "What is the sareeqah?" He said, "Thin bread eaten as a meal." He also added there "or nabidh" after "milk." And at the end he said, He said, "I might sometimes go out in the morning having tasted nothing but water." The speaker here is Ibn Abbas.Tabarani also transmitted it in Al-Kabir (11427) by way of Abdul-Razzaq, and its chain of transmission is sahih.
