The Prophet ﷺ would not go out on the day of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten, and he would not eat on the day of Eid al-Adha until he had prayed.
كان النبي ﷺ لا يخرج يوم الفطر حتى يطعم، ولا يطعم يوم الأضحى حتى يصلي.
Tirmidhi (542) and Ibn Majah (1756) both narrated it through the route of Thawab bin Utbah Mahri, from Abdullah bin Burayda, from his father, and he mentioned it. The wording given is that of Tirmidhi, while the wording of Ibn Majah is, "He would not eat on the Day of Sacrifice until he returned." Tirmidhi said, "A gharib hadith."I say, this is because it contains Thawab bin Utbah, about whom there is disagreement. Ibn Main deemed him reliable, Abu Dawud said, "There is no harm in him," and Bukhari said, "I know of no hadith from Thawab bin Utbah other than this one." However, he has a corroborating narration, for Ahmad (22984) narrated it through the route of Uqba bin Abdullah Rifai, who said, "Abdullah bin Burayda narrated to me, from his father," and it contains, "He would not eat on the Day of Sacrifice until he returned, and then he would eat from his sacrificial animal."This hadith was graded sahih by Ibn Khuzayma (1426), Ibn Hibban (2812), and Hakim (1/294), all of them through the route of Thawab bin Utbah Mahri, with the same wording. Hakim said, "This is a hadith sahih in its chain of transmission, though the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not include it. Thawab bin Utbah Mahri has few hadiths, but he has not been discredited in a manner that would invalidate his hadith, and this is a rare practice as far as the chains of narration go, though it is widespread among the lands of the Muslims."
