When this verse was revealed, "Say, He is the One who has the power to send a punishment upon you from above you" [Anam 6:65], the Prophet ﷺ said, "I seek refuge in Your Face."Then came, "or from beneath your feet", and the Prophet ﷺ said, "I seek refuge in Your Face."Then came, "or to confound you with division into sects", and the Prophet ﷺ said, "This is easier."
لما نزلت هذه الآية {قل هو القادر على أن يبعث عليكم عذابا من فوقكم} [سورة الأنعام ٦٥] قال النبي ﷺ: أعوذ بوجهك فقال: {أو من تحت أرجلكم}، فقال النبي ﷺ: أعوذ بوجهك قال: {أو يلبسكم شيعا}، فقال النبي ﷺ: هذا أيسرا.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Tawhid (7406), in the chapter on the saying of Allah Almighty, "Everything is perishing except His Face" [Qasas 28:88], from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Hammad bin Zayd narrated to us, from Amr, from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he mentioned it.
