When death drew near to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he began throwing a striped cloak over his face. Whenever he felt distressed, he would uncover his face. While in that state, he said, "May the curse of Allah be upon the Jews and the Christians, for they took the graves of their prophets as places of worship," warning against what they had done.
لما نزل برسول الله ﷺ طفق يطرح خميصة على وجهه، فإذا اغتم كشفها عن وجهه فقال وهو كذلك: لعنة الله على اليهود والنصارى اتخذوا قبور أنبيائهم مساجد يحذر ما صنعوا.
Bukhari narrated it in the hadiths of the Prophets (3453, 3454), and this is his wording, and Muslim narrated it in the Mosques (531), both of them through Yunus, from Zuhri, who said, Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba informed me, from Ayesha and Ibn Abbas, and they mentioned the like of it. Bukhari paired Maamar together with Yunus.As for his saying "nazala" (with two fathas), the subject is omitted, meaning death. In Muslim's version it is "nuzzila" (with the nun vowelled with a damma and the zay with a kasra).
