Aisha reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said during his final illness, "May Allah curse the Jews and the Christians, for they took the graves of their prophets as places of worship."She said, "Were it not for that, his grave would have been made visible, but I fear it would be taken as a place of worship." This is how it appears in Bukhari's narration.In Muslim's narration, she said, "Were it not for that, his grave would have been made visible, but it was feared that it would be taken as a place of worship." The word khushiya is read with a damma on the kha.
قال رسول الله ﷺ في مرضه الذي مات فيه: لعن الله اليهود والنصارى اتخذوا قبور أنبيائهم مساجد. قالت: ولولا ذلك لأبرزوا قبره، غير أني أخشى أن يتخذ مسجدا. هكذا في رواية البخاري. وفي رواية مسلم قالت: فلولا ذاك أبرز قبره، غير أنه خشي أن يتخذ مسجدا. خشي: بضم الخاء.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Funerals (1330), and Muslim in the Book of Mosques (529), both from the hadith of Shayban (he is Ibn Abdul-Rahman Nahwi), from Hilal bin Abu Humayd, from Urwa bin Zubayr, from Ayesha, who narrated the same account.His saying, "khushiya" with the damma vowel is close to what Bukhari mentioned, and if it is read with the fatha vowel, "khashiya," then the pronoun refers back to the Prophet ﷺ.
