The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The angels keep praying for one of you as long as he remains in the place where he prayed, provided he does not break his ablution. They say, 'Allah, forgive him. Allah, have mercy on him.' And one of you remains in a state of prayer as long as the prayer is what holds him back, with nothing preventing him from returning to his family except the prayer."
إن رسول الله ﷺ قال: الملائكة تصلي على أحدكم مادام في مصلاه الذي صلى فيه مالم يحدث. اللهم اغفر له، اللهم ارحمه لا يزال أحدكم في صلاة ما كانت الصلاة تحبسه، لا يمنعه أن ينقلب إلى أهله إلا الصلاة.
Malik narrated it in the Chapter on Shortening the Prayer (51), from Abu Zinad, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah, as mentioned above.Bukhari narrated it in the Chapter on the Adhan (659), from Abdullah bin Maslama, and Muslim narrated it in the Chapter on Mosques (275/649), from Yahya bin Yahya, both of them from Malik with the same wording.He also narrated it through the route of Sufyan, from Ayub Sakhtiyani, from Ibn Sirin, from Abu Hurairah, with this wording, "The angels continue to pray for one of you as long as he remains in his place, saying, 'O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, have mercy on him,' so long as he does not break wind. And one of you is considered to be in prayer as long as the prayer keeps him waiting."And from Abu Rafi, from Abu Hurairah, I said, "What does it mean to break wind?" He said, "It means passing wind silently or audibly."
