I heard Abdullah bin Zayd al-Mazini say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the prayer ground and prayed for rain, and he turned his cloak around when he faced the qiblah."
سمعت عبد الله بن زيد المازني يقول: خرج رسول الله ﷺ إلى المصلى فاستسقى، وحول رداءه حين استقبل القبلة.
Malik narrated it in the chapter on rain prayer (1) from Abdullah bin Abu Bakr bin Amr bin Hazm, that it was Abbad bin Tamim, and he mentioned it. Muslim narrated it in the chapter on rain prayer (894) from Yahya bin Yahya, from Malik, with the same wording. Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on rain prayer (1028) through another route from Abu Bakr bin Muhammad, from Abbad bin Tamim, with similar wording.Abu Hanifa, may Allah have mercy on him, used this hadith as evidence that there is no prayer in the rain prayer supplication. His student Muhammad bin Hasan opposed him on this, saying, "In our view, the imam leads the people in two units of prayer, then supplicates and turns his cloak, placing the right side on the left and the left side on the right, and no one does this except the imam." This is what he said in Muwatta Malik, in Taliq Mumajjad (2/76-77).Shaykh Lucknawi said, "Contrary to Shafii, Malik, and Ahmad, who based their view on what is reported in Musnad Ahmad, that the people also turned their cloaks along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and it appears that he observed this and did not object to them."
