The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the forenoon prayer in his house, and they stood behind him and prayed along with him.
أن رسول الله ﷺ صلى في بيته سبحة الضحى، فقاموا وراءه فصلوا بصلاته.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (23773) from Uthman bin Umar, who said, Yunus narrated to us, from Zuhri, from Mahmud bin Rabi, from Itban bin Malik, and he related it.He also narrated it (16479) from Yahya bin Adam, who said, Ibn Mubarak narrated to us, from Maamar, from Zuhri, with the same chain, and its wording is, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in the forenoon, and we gave the closing salutation when he did," meaning that he led them in prayer in a masjid they had. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih (1231) and narrated it via the route of Uthman bin Umar with the same chain, in the same manner. The original hadith of Itban is found in Malik's chapter on shortening the prayer (86), from Ibn Shihab, from Mahmud bin Rabi Ansari, that Itban bin Malik used to lead his people in prayer, and he was blind, and he said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Darkness comes, and rain, and floods, and I am a man of weak eyesight, so pray, O Messenger of Allah, in my house, at a place I can take as a place of prayer." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him and said, "Where would you like me to pray?" So he pointed him to a spot in the house, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed there.Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Adhan (667) from Ismail, who said, Malik narrated it to me with the same chain, in the same manner. He also narrated it in several other places, including in the Book of Prayer, chapter on Masjids in Houses (425), and in the Book of Adhan (838, 840), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Masjids (263/33), through routes other than Malik, from Ibn Shihab with the same chain, both in abridged and in full form.Baghawi narrated it in Sharh al-Sunnah (4/136) via the route of Uthman bin Umar, who said, Yunus narrated to us, from Zuhri, with the same chain, and its wording is, "He prayed in his house the voluntary forenoon prayer, so they stood behind him and prayed." He said, "It is agreed to be sahih." But this requires examination, for the two sheikhs did not transmit the wording that Baghawi presented. The hadith of Yunus from Zuhri was narrated by Bukhari in the Book of Military Expeditions (4010), and it does not contain the word "forenoon." However, Bukhari mentioned it as a suspended narration and gave it the chapter heading, "The forenoon prayer while at home, as stated by Itban bin Malik, from the Prophet ﷺ," Fath al-Bari (3/56), and the Hafiz pointed to the narration of Imam Ahmad from Uthman bin Umar, from Yunus, with the same chain.
