During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whenever a man had a dream he would relate it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I longed to have a dream that I could relate to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I was a young lad at the time, and I used to sleep in the mosque during the era of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.I saw in a dream that two angels seized me and took me to the Fire. It was constructed like a well with curved sides, and it had two horns. Inside it were people I recognized, so I began to say, "I seek refuge with Allah from the Fire."Then another angel met us and said to me, "Do not be afraid."I related the dream to Hafsah, and Hafsah related it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "What an excellent man Abdullah is, if only he prayed during the night."After that, he did not sleep at night except for a little.
كان الرجل في حياة رسول الله ﷺ إذا رأى رؤيا قصها على رسول الله ﷺ، فتمنيت أن أرى رؤيا فأقصها على رسول الله ﷺ وكنت غلاما شابا، وكنت أنام في المسجد على عهد رسول الله ﷺ فرأيت في النوم كأن ملكين أخذاني فذهبا بي إلى النار، فإذا هي مطوية كطي البئر، وإذا لها قرنان، وإذا فيها أناس قد عرفتهم فجعلت أقول: أعوذ بالله من النار. قال: فلقينا ملك آخر فقال لي: ترغ. فقصصتها على حفصة، فقصتها حفصة على رسول الله ﷺ فقال: نعم الرجل عبد الله لو كان يصلي من الليل. فكان بعد لا ينام من الليل إلا قليلا.
Bukhari narrated it in the book of tahajjud (1122, 1121), and Muslim in the book of the virtues of the companions (2479), both of them through the route of Abdul-Razzaq, who said, Mamar informed us, from Zuhri, from Salim, from his father, and he related it. Their wordings are the same, except that Muslim repeated "I seek refuge in Allah from the Fire" three times. The same is found in Bukhari as well (3738). And the one who said, "After that he would sleep only a little at night," is Salim.
