Safwan bin Muattal asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Messenger of Allah, I want to ask you about a matter that you know well and I am ignorant of."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "What is it?"Safwan asked, "Are there any hours of the day or night during which prayer is disliked?"The Prophet ﷺ answered, "Yes. When you have prayed the dawn prayer, refrain from praying until the sun has risen, for it rises between the two horns of Satan. Then pray, for the prayer is witnessed and accepted until the sun stands directly overhead like a spear. When it is overhead like a spear, refrain from prayer, for at that hour Hell is stoked and its gates are opened, until the sun inclines away from your right brow. Once it has passed the meridian, the prayer is witnessed and accepted until you have prayed the afternoon prayer. Then refrain from prayer until the sun has set."
سأل صفوان بن المعطل رسول الله ﷺ فقال: يا رسول الله! إني سائلك عن أمر أنت به عالم وأنا به جاهل، قال: وما هو؟ قال: هل من ساعات الليل والنهار ساعة تكره فيها الصلاة؟ قال: نعم. إذا صليت الصبح، فدع الصلاة حتى تطلع الشمس، فإنها تطلع بقرني الشيطان، ثم صل فالصلاة محضورة متقبلة حتى تستوي الشمس على رأسك كالرمح، فإذا كانت على رأسك كالرمح فدع الصلاة، فإن تلك الساعة تسجر فيها جهنم وتفتح فيها أبوابها، حتى تزيغ الشمس عن حاجبك الأيمن، فإذا زالت فالصلاة محضورة متقبلة حتى تصلي العصر. ثم دع الصلاة حتى تغيب الشمس.
Ibn Majah (1252) narrated it from Hasan bin Dawud Munkadiri, who said, "Ibn Abu Fudayk narrated to us, from Dahhak bin Uthman, from Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah," and he related it.Its chain of transmission is hasan, due to the discussion regarding Hasan bin Dawud, though his hadith is hasan, and Busiri graded it hasan in Zawaid. Hafiz remained silent about it in Fath al-Bari (2/63).It has a corroborating narration in Ibn Hibban (1542) and Bayhaqi (2/455), who both narrated it with their own chains through the route of Ibn Abu Fudayk (that is, Muhammad bin Ismail bin Abu Fudayk), with the same wording.Bayhaqi said, "Iyad bin Abdullah Qurashi also narrated it, from Saeed Maqburi, with similar wording, except that he did not name the questioner."I say, and Ibn Khuzayma narrated it through his route in his Sahih (1275). Iyad bin Abdullah is Fihri Madani, who settled in Egypt. Ibn Main said, "Daif." Abu Hatim said, "He is not strong." Bukhari said, "His hadith is denounced."Abu Yaala also narrated it, placing it within the musnad of Safwan bin Muattal. He said, "Muhammad bin Abu Bakr Muqaddami narrated to us, saying, Humayd bin Aswad narrated to us, saying, Dahhak bin Uthman narrated to us, from Maqburi, from Safwan bin Muattal, that he asked the Prophet ﷺ," and he related similar wording, as found in Ithaf Khayra (1275).Busiri pointed to the narration of Ibn Majah and Ibn Khuzayma.
