I said, "Prophet of Allah, tell me about what Allah has taught you and which I do not know. Tell me about prayer."He said, "Pray the dawn prayer, then refrain from praying until the sun rises and climbs high, for it rises between the two horns of Satan, and at that moment the disbelievers prostrate to it. Then pray, for the prayer is witnessed and attended, until the shadow becomes equal to the spear at midday. Then refrain from praying, for at that time Hell is stoked. When the shadow lengthens, pray, for the prayer is witnessed and attended, until you have prayed the afternoon prayer. Then refrain from praying until the sun sets, for it sets between the two horns of Satan, and at that moment the disbelievers prostrate to it."
قلت: يا نبي الله أخبرني عما علمك الله وأجهله. أخبرني عن الصلاة. قال: صل صلاة الصبح. ثم أقصر عن الصلاة حتى تطلع الشمس حتى ترتفع، فإنها تطلع حين تطلع بين قرني شيطان، وحينئذ يسجد لها الكفار، ثم صل فإن الصلاة مشهودة محضورة حتى يستقل الظل بالرمح، ثم أقصر عن الصلاة فإن حينئذ تسجر جهنم، فإذا أقبل الفى فصل فإن الصلاة مشهودة محضورة حتى تصلي العصر، ثم أقصر عن الصلاة حتى تغرب الشمس، فإنها تغرب بين قرني شيطان، وحينئذ يسجد لها الكفار.
Muslim narrated it in the Prayer of Travelers (832), from Ahmad bin Jafar Maqburi, who said, Nadr bin Muhammad narrated to us, Ikrima bin Ammar narrated to us, Shaddad bin Abdullah Abu Ammar and Yahya bin Abu Kathir narrated to us, from Abu Umama who said, Amr bin Abasa said, and he related the story of his conversion to Islam in a long hadith already mentioned in the discussion of the reward of wudu. This hadith has also been narrated from the musnad of Abu Umama himself, that he asked the Prophet ﷺ, "What are you?" He said, "A prophet." He asked, "To whom were you sent?" He said, "To the red and the black." He asked, "At what time is prayer disliked?" He said, "From when you pray the dawn prayer until the sun rises the height of a spear, and from when the sun turns yellow until it sets." He asked, "At what time is supplication most heard?" He said, "In the latter half of the night, and after the end of the obligatory prayers." He asked, "When is the setting of the sun?" He said, "From the very start when the sun turns yellow, when yellowness enters it, until the sun sets."Abdul-Razzaq (3948) narrated it from Ibn Jurayj, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Sabit informed me that Abu Umama asked the Prophet ﷺ, and he related the same. Ibn Jurayj is a mudallis, but he explicitly stated that he was informed directly. However, Abdul-Rahman bin Sabit did not hear from Abu Umama, as Ibn Main said, so there is a break in the chain.Imam Ahmad (22245), Abu Yaala in Ithaf Khayra (1272), Tabarani in Al-Kabir (8107, 8105), and Harith bin Abu Usama in Ithaf Khayra (1271) all narrated it, all of them by way of Layth, from Ibn Sabit, from Abu Umama, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not pray at sunrise, for it rises between the two horns of a devil, and every disbeliever prostrates to it. Nor at its setting, for it sets between the two horns of a devil, and every disbeliever prostrates to it. Nor at midday, for that is when Hell is stoked."Layth is Ibn Abu Salim bin Zunaym, with a zay and a nun, in diminutive form. He was described as having weak memory after his mind became confused, so he would reverse chains of transmission, treat disconnected reports as connected, and attribute to trustworthy narrators things that were not from their actual hadiths, as Ibn Hibban said. So I fear that this hadith actually belongs to the musnad of Amr bin Abasa, as Muslim narrated it and as already documented, and that it was mistakenly attributed to the musnad of Abu Umama.
