While we were praying with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he heard the commotion of some men. When he finished the prayer, he asked, "What is the matter with you?"They replied, "We were rushing to catch the prayer."He said, "Do not do that. When you come to the prayer, come with calmness. Whatever you catch, pray it, and whatever you miss, complete it."
بينما نحن نصلي مع رسول الله ﷺ فسمع جلبة رجال، فلما صلى قال: ما شأنكم؟ قالوا: استعجلنا إلى الصلاة. قال: فلا تفعلوا إذا أتيتم الصلاة فعليكم بالسكينة، فما أدركتم فصلوا، وما فاتكم فأتموا.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Adhan (635), and Muslim in the Book of Mosques (603), both through Yahya bin Abu Kathir, who said, "Abdullah bin Abu Qatada told me that his father told him," and then he related the hadith. This is how Muslim related it, while Bukhari related it using "an" (indicating transmission without explicit wording of direct hearing), along with "the clamor of men," meaning their voices while they were moving about.
