The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you comes to the prayer, let him walk at his normal pace. Let him pray whatever he catches, and make up whatever he missed."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: إذا جاء أحدكم إلى الصلاة فليمش على هيئته، فليصل ما أدرك، وليقض ما سبقه.
Abu Yaala reported it (3802, edited by Athari) from Masruq bin Marzuban, who said, "Yahya bin Zakariya related to us, from Humayd, from Anas," and he mentioned the same. Its chain is hasan due to the discussion surrounding Masruq bin Marzuban, though his hadith is judged hasan when it is corroborated. We have indeed found a corroborating report. Tabarani related it in Awsat (2718) through another route, from Muammal, from Hammad, from Thabit, from Anas. Hammad said, "I know of nothing except that he attributed it directly to the Prophet," and he then mentioned the hadith in the same manner. Muammal is also disputed, though he is accepted when his reports are corroborated by others. Tabarani has other chains as well. See Majmaul-Bahrayn (673, 674).As for Haythami's statement in Majma (2/31), "Its narrators are the narrators of the sahih," this is not correct, for Muammal bin Ismail is not among the narrators of the sahih collections.It appears that Humayd al-Tawil narrates this hadith both in a longer and a shorter form. In the longer version, there is the story of a man who came and joined the row while out of breath, and said, "Praise be to Allah, abundant, good, and blessed praise..." as was mentioned earlier in the section on the opening supplication of the prayer, from the hadith of Muslim, who related it through the route of Affan, from Hammad, "Qatada, Thabit, and Humayd informed us, from Anas," except that he did not mention, "When one of you comes... etc."However, Abu Dawud related it (763) from Musa bin Ismail, from Hammad, with the same wording, and he said, "Humayd added to it, 'When one of you comes, let him walk in the manner he was already walking, and let him pray whatever portion he catches, and make up whatever he missed.'"Likewise, the imam (Ahmad) related it (12034) from Ibn Abu Adi and Sahl bin Yusuf, both from Humayd, with the same wording. And from Abu Kamil (12713), from Hammad bin Salama, from Qatada, Thabit, and Humayd, with the same wording, thereby combining the opening supplication with the Prophet's ﷺ instruction to the one who hurried in his walking.
