Muaz bin Jabal used to pray with the Prophet ﷺ, then return and lead his people in prayer. One night he led them in the evening prayer and recited Surah al-Baqarah. A man broke off from the prayer, and Muaz apparently spoke critically of him. Word of this reached the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "A troublemaker, a troublemaker, a troublemaker," three times, or he said, "One who drives people away, one who drives people away, one who drives people away." He then instructed him to recite two surahs from the middle portion of al-Mufassal.Amr said, "I do not remember which two."
كان معاذ بن جبل يصلي مع النبي ﷺ، ثم يرجع فيوم قومه، فصلى العشاء فقرأ بالبقرة، فانصرف الرجل، فكأن معاذا تناول منه، فبلغ النبي ﷺ فقال: فتان فتان فتان (ثلاث مرار) أو قال: فاتنا فاتنا فاتنا وأمره بسورتين من أوسط المفصل. قال عمرو: لا أحفظهما.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Adhan (701), and Muslim in the Book of Prayer (465), both through Amr bin Dinar, from Jabir bin Abdullah, with this wording, and the wording given here is Bukhari's.In Muslim's wording, the man turned aside, gave the greeting of peace, then prayed alone and left. They said to him, "Have you become a hypocrite, so-and-so?" He said, "No, by Allah! I will indeed go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and tell him." So he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, we are owners of camels used for irrigation and we work during the day, and Muaz prayed the night prayer with you, then came and opened with Surah Baqarah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to Muaz and said, "Muaz, are you causing trial? Recite such and such, and recite such and such."Sufyan said, I said to Amr, "Abu Zubayr told us, from Jabir, that he said, 'Recite "By the sun and its brightness", and "By the forenoon", and "By the night when it covers", and "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High".'" Amr said, "Something like that."
