The Prophet ﷺ recited Surah al-Araf in the two rakahs of the Maghrib prayer.
أن النبي ﷺ قرأ في المغرب بالأعراف في الركعتين.
Imam Ahmad (23544) and Tabarani in al-Kabir (136/5) both narrated it from Waki, who said, "Hisham bin Urwa narrated to us, from his father, from Abu Ayub, or from Zayd bin Thabit," and he related the hadith. Its narrators are trustworthy and its chain is sahih. Haythami said (2699), "Ahmad and Tabarani narrated it, and the narrators of Ahmad's version are the narrators of the Sahih collections."Note, in the printed edition of Tabarani, "Urwa" has dropped out, because Tabarani narrated it through the route of Ibn Abu Shayba (1/369), where it is confirmed. As for what is narrated from Ibn Umar, who said, "The Prophet ﷺ used to recite in Maghrib, "Say, 'O disbelievers'" [Kafirun 109:1], and "Say, 'He is Allah, the One'" [Ikhlas 112:1]," this is daif.Ibn Majah (823) narrated it from Ahmad bin Budayl, who said, "Hafs bin Ghiyath narrated to us, who said, Ubaydullah narrated to us, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar," and he related it. Ahmad bin Budayl and his teacher Hafs bin Ghiyath are both daif, and their reports cannot be relied upon.Ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Bari (2/248), "I have not seen any marfu hadith that explicitly specifies reciting any of the short surahs of the Mufassal in it, except a hadith in Ibn Majah from Ibn Umar, which explicitly names Kafirun and Ikhlas. Something similar is found in Ibn Hibban from Jabir bin Samura. As for the hadith of Ibn Majah, its chain appears sahih on the surface, but it is defective. Daraqutni said, 'Some of its narrators erred in it.' As for the hadith of Jabir bin Samura, it contains Saeed bin Simak, who is discarded, and what is preserved is that he recited them in the two rakahs after Maghrib." End of his words. There is room for reconsideration regarding Ibn Hajar's claim, because it has been established that the Prophet ﷺ recited the short surahs of the Mufassal in Maghrib, and if he recited something else on some occasions, it should be understood that he recited part of it. All of this is permissible, though the jurists have differed on the matter.Malik disliked reciting long surahs such as Tur and Mursalat in Maghrib prayer, and Abu Hanifa held the same view. Shafii said, "I do not dislike that, rather I recommend reciting these surahs in Maghrib prayer."
