The Prophet ﷺ said, "The middle prayer is the afternoon prayer."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: صلاة الوسطى صلاة العصر.

Tirmidhi (182) narrated it from Hannad, who said, Abdah related to us, from Saeed (that is, Ibn Abu Aruba), from Hasan, from Samura bin Jundab, and he mentioned something similar. Tirmidhi said, Muhammad, meaning Bukhari, said that Ali bin Abdullah said, "The hadith of Hasan from Samura bin Jundab is a sahih hadith, and he did hear from him." Tirmidhi also said, "The hadith of Samura concerning the middle prayer is a hasan hadith, and this is the view of most of the scholars among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ and others."Imam Ahmad (20091) and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (6824) both narrated it through the route of Aban bin Yazid, who said, Qatada related to us, from Hasan, from Samura, that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Guard strictly your prayers, and the middle prayer" [Baqarah 2:238]. He said, "He named it for us, that it is the Asr prayer."Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Hasan, and there is a well-known dispute concerning whether he actually heard from Samura. The sound conclusion is that he did hear from him without restriction, as Ibn Madini and Bukhari stated.
