This verse was revealed, and we recited it for as long as Allah willed. Then Allah abrogated it, and the following was revealed, "Guard strictly the prayers and the Asr prayer" [Baqarah 2:238]. نزلت هذه الآية: فقرأناها ما شاء الله. ثم نسخها الله، فنزلت: {حفظوا على الصلوات وصلاة العصر}. فقر أناها ما شاء الله، ثم نسخها الله، فنزلت: {حفظوا على الصلوات والصلوة الوسطى}. فقال رجل كان جالسا عند شقيق له: هي إذن صلاة العصر، فقال البراء: قد أخبرتك كيف نزلت، وكيف نسخها الله.
