The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever misses the afternoon prayer is as though he has lost his family and his wealth."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: الذي تفوته صلاة العصر كأنما وتر أهله وماله.
Malik narrated it in "The Times of Prayer" (21), from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, and he mentioned something similar. Bukhari also narrated it from Malik in "The Prayer Times" (552), as did Muslim in "The Mosques" (200).There is disagreement about what is meant by "loss." Some said it means delaying the prayer beyond its permissible time without a valid excuse, since sin results from that. Others said it means missing it in congregation.As for his saying "wutira" ("he is deprived"), it means "diminished." One says "watartuhu" when he has diminished something, as though you had made it a single remainder after it had been much.
