He heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Your duration compared to the nations that came before you is like the time between the afternoon prayer and sunset. The people of the Torah were given the Torah, and they worked with it until midday, when they grew weary, so they were each given a qirat. Then the people of the Gospel were given the Gospel, and they worked with it until the afternoon prayer, when they too grew weary, so they were each given a qirat. Then we were given the Quran, and we worked with it until sunset, so we were each given two qirats. The people of the two scriptures said, 'Our Lord, you have given these people two qirats each and given us only one qirat each, yet we worked more.'Allah said, 'Have I wronged you in anything regarding your reward?'They said, 'No.'He said, 'That is my bounty, which I bestow upon whom I will.'"
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Prayer Times (557) from the hadith of Ibn Shihab, from Salim bin Abdullah, from his father Abdullah bin Umar, and he mentioned the hadith. He also narrated it through other chains from Abdullah bin Umar, see numbers (2268, 2269, 3459, 7533, 7467, 5021). It contains an indication that the time for Asr prayer extends until sunset, and this is an explanation of what came in the hadith of Abu Hurairah, "If one of you catches a sajdah of Asr prayer before the sun sets, let him complete his prayer."
