The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The Fire complained to its Lord, saying, 'My Lord, parts of me have consumed other parts.' So He permitted it two breaths, one in winter and one in summer. The most intense heat you experience and the most intense cold you experience are from those two."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: اشتكت النار إلى ربها، فقالت: رب أكل بعضي بعضا، فأذن لها بنفسين: نفس في الشتاء، ونفس في الصيف، فأشد ما تجدون من الحر وأشد ما تجدون من الزمهرير.
Bukhari narrated it in Beginning of Creation (3260), and Muslim in Mosques (617), both through Ibn Shihab Zuhri, who said, Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman told me that he heard Abu Hurairah narrate it as already mentioned. The wording given here is Bukhari's, and Muslim's wording is similar.Similar in meaning is what was narrated from Anas bin Malik, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "The Fire complained to its Lord, saying, 'My Lord, part of me has consumed the other part.' So He gave it two breaths, one in winter and one in summer. So the intensity of heat you feel is its heat, and the intensity of cold you feel is its bitter cold.'"Abu Yaala (4303) narrated it from Abu Khaythama, who said, Mualla bin Mansur told us, Muhammad bin Muslim Abu Saeed told us, Ziyad Numayri told me, from Anas bin Malik, who narrated it as mentioned above. Ziyad is Ziyad bin Abdullah Numayri, who is considered daif among the scholars of hadith.His saying "zamharir" means intense cold. Allah the Exalted says about the people of Paradise, "Reclining therein on couches, they will not see therein any sun or bitter cold" [Insan 76:13], meaning they have neither troubling heat nor painful cold.
