The Prophet ﷺ said, "Among them are those whom the Fire will reach up to their ankles, among them are those whom the Fire will reach up to their knees, among them are those whom the Fire will reach up to their waists, and among them are those whom the Fire will reach up to their collarbones."
أن النبي ﷺ قال: منهم من تأخذه النار إلى كعبيه، ومنهم من تأخذه النار إلى ركبتيه، ومنهم من تأخذه النار إلى حجزته، ومنهم من تأخذه النار إلى ترقوته.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Paradise (2845:33) from Amr bin Zurara, who said, Abdul-Wahhab - meaning Ibn Ata - informed us, from Saeed, from Qatada, who said, "I heard Abu Nadra narrating from Samura bin Jundab," and he related it.His saying "hijzatuhu" (his waistband) refers to the place where the waist-wrap and trousers are fastened. His saying "tarquwatuhu" (his collarbone) refers to the bone between the hollow of the throat and the shoulder.The disbelievers, just as they are punished with fire, are likewise punished with cold as well, if the meaning of "ghassaq" in the words of Allah Most High, "This is it, so let them taste it, scalding water and ghassaq" [Surah Sad 38:57], is the intense cold that cannot be endured, like the scalding water that burns. But if its meaning is what oozes from the skins of the people of the Fire, their pus and discharge and the like, then there is no evidence in this verse for their being punished with cold.As for what was narrated from Abu Saeed Khudri - or from Ibn Hujayra the Elder, from Abu Hurairah - or one of them narrated it to him from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said, "When it is a hot day and a man says, 'There is no god but Allah, how intense is the heat of this day! O Allah, protect me from the heat of Hell,' Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says to Hell, 'A servant of Mine has sought protection from Me from your heat, so bear witness that I have granted him protection.' And when it is a day of intense cold and a servant says, 'There is no god but Allah, how intense is the cold of this day! O Allah, protect me from the freezing cold of Hell,' Allah says to Hell, 'A servant of Mine has sought My protection from your freezing cold, and I bear witness to you that I have granted him protection.'" They said, "What is the freezing cold of Hell?" He said, "A chamber into which the disbeliever is cast, and they are separated from one another by the intensity of its cold."This is daif.Ibn Sunni narrated it in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla (307) from Jafar bin Isa Halwani, who said, Ibrahim bin Hani narrated to us, who said, Abu Salih narrated to us, who said, Yahya bin Ayub narrated to us from Abdullah bin Sulayman, who said, Darraj narrated to me, who said, Abu Haytham - whose name was Sulayman bin Amr bin Ubayd Atwari - narrated to me from Abu Saeed, and he related it.Darraj is Ibn Saman, Abu Samh Qurashi, who is trustworthy, except for what he narrates from Abu Haytham from Abu Saeed, as Imam Ahmad and Abu Dawud said, and this is one such case.Abu Hatim, Nasai, Daraqutni, and others declared it daif.
