I brought the Prophet ﷺ some bread and meat, and he ate. Then he called for water for ablution and performed wudu with it, then he prayed Dhuhr. After that, he called for what remained of his food and ate it, then he stood up to pray without performing wudu again.
قربت للنبي ﷺ خبزا ولحما فأكل، ثم دعا بوضوء فتوضأ به، ثم صلى الظهر، ثم دعا بفضل طعامه فأكل، ثم قام إلى الصلاة ولم يتوضأ.
Abu Dawud narrated it (191). He said, Ibrahim bin Hasan Khathami told us, Hajjaj told us, Ibn Jurayj said, Muhammad bin Munkadir informed me, he said, I heard Jabir bin Abdullah say, and then he mentioned it.This is a refutation of what Bayhaqi reported in Marifah from Shafii, that he said, "Ibn Munkadir did not hear this hadith from Jabir, rather he heard it from Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, from Jabir." For Ibn Munkadir explicitly stated in Ibn Jurayj's narration that he heard it from Jabir.What led Shafii to this conclusion was Sufyan's doubt, in some of the narrations, about whether Ibn Munkadir had heard this hadith from Jabir.Tirmidhi (80) said, Ibn Abu Umar told us, Sufyan bin Uyayna told us, he said, Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel told us, he heard Jabir. Sufyan said, and Muhammad bin Munkadir told us, from Jabir, who said, the Messenger of Allah went out and I was with him. He entered upon a woman from the Ansar, who slaughtered a sheep for him and he ate, and she brought him a tray of fresh dates and he ate from it. Then he performed wudu for Zuhr and prayed, then left. She brought him some of the remaining meat from the sheep and he ate, then he prayed Asr without performing wudu.In Musnad Ahmad (14299), Sufyan says, I heard Ibn Munkadir say, more than once, from Jabir, and it seems I once heard him say, someone who heard Jabir informed me, so I assumed he heard it from Ibn Aqeel. Both Ibn Munkadir and Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel reported, from Jabir, that the Prophet ate meat, then prayed without performing wudu, that Abu Bakr ate colostrum, then prayed without performing wudu, and that Umar ate meat, then prayed without performing wudu.Ibn Majah (489) also recorded it through Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Ibn Munkadir, Amr bin Dinar, and Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, all of them from Jabir, who said, the Prophet, Abu Bakr, and Umar ate bread and meat and did not perform wudu.In this chain, Sufyan heard it from three people, one of whom was Ibn Munkadir, yet he doubted whether Ibn Munkadir had heard it from Jabir. But doubt is overruled by certainty.Others besides Sufyan bin Uyayna narrated it, and they did not doubt that Ibn Munkadir heard it from Jabir, as already mentioned in Abu Dawud's narration through Ibn Jurayj, which explicitly states that he heard it from him.His saying "al-alalah," with a dammah on the unpointed ayn, means the remainder, or that with which one occupies oneself little by little. Here it means the remaining meat of the sheep.His saying "liba," with a kasrah on the lam and a fatha on the ba, following the pattern of "inab," means the first milk at birth. Abu Zayd said, it is usually three milkings at most and one milking at least. Misbah Munir.His saying "al-qinaa" means the tray.
