Abdullah bin Masud reported,

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah will gather the first and the last for the appointed time of a known day, standing for forty years with their eyes fixed upon the sky, awaiting the judgment to be passed."He said, "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will descend in canopies of clouds from the Throne to the Footstool. Then a caller will proclaim, 'O people, are you not content with the Lord who created you, provided for you, and commanded you to worship Him alone without associating anything with Him, that He should now allow each people among you to follow what they used to follow and worship in this religion? Is that not justice from your Lord?'They will reply, 'Yes indeed.'He will say, 'Then let every people go to whatever they used to worship in the world.'So they will set off, and likenesses of what they used to worship will be presented before them. Some will go off to the sun, some to the moon, some to idols of stone, and to the various things they used to worship. For those who used to worship Isa, the devil of Isa will be shown to them, and for those who worshipped Uzayr, the devil of Uzayr will be shown to them. Muhammad ﷺ and his community will remain. Then the Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, will come to them and say, 'Why are you not setting off as the others have set off?'They will reply, 'We have a God whom we have not yet seen.'He will say, 'Would you recognize Him if you saw Him?'They will say, 'There is a sign between us and Him. When we see it, we will know Him.'He will ask, 'And what is it?'They will say, 'He will uncover His shin.'At that, He will uncover His shin, and every person whose back had a covering plate over it will fall in prostration. There will remain a people whose backs are like the backs of cattle drovers, wishing to prostrate but unable to do so, for He had called them to prostration in the world while they were sound and they refused. Then He will say, 'Raise your heads.'They will raise their heads, and He will give them light according to their deeds. Some will be given light like a great mountain that runs before them. Some will be given less than that. Some will be given light like a palm tree at their right hand. Some will be given less than that, until the last of them will be a man whose light is given upon the toe of his foot, glowing once and going out once. When it glows, he advances his foot and walks. When it goes out, he stands still. The Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, will be before them until He passes through the Fire, leaving a path behind Him like the edge of a sword, slippery and treacherous. He will say, 'Pass.' So they will pass according to their light. Some will pass like the blink of an eye, some like lightning, some like clouds, some like a shooting star, some like the wind, some like a galloping horse, some like a running man, until the one whose light was placed upon his big toes will pass crawling on his face, hands, and feet. A hand falls and a hand catches hold, a foot falls and a foot catches hold, and the Fire scorches his sides. He will continue like that until he is delivered. When he is delivered, he will stand and say, 'Praise be to Allah. Allah has given me what He has given to no one else, in saving me from it after I have seen it.'Then he will be brought to a pool by the gate of Paradise. He will bathe in it, and the fragrance and complexion of the people of Paradise will return to him. He will see what is in Paradise through the gate and say, 'Lord, admit me to Paradise.'Allah will say to him, 'Do you ask for Paradise when I have already saved you from the Fire?'He will say, 'Lord, place between me and it a barrier so I do not hear its sound.'So he will enter Paradise. Then a dwelling will be shown to him, or raised before him, as if he is already in it though it is still ahead of him.He will say, 'Lord, give me that dwelling.'He will be told, 'Perhaps if I give it to you, you will ask for another?'He will say, 'No, by Your might, I will not ask You for any other. What dwelling could be better than this?'So He will give it to him, and he will take up residence in it. Then he will see another dwelling before him, as if it is a dream compared to the first. He will say, 'Lord, give me that dwelling.'Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will say to him, 'Perhaps if I give it to you, you will ask for another?'He will say, 'No, by Your might, I will not ask You for any other. What dwelling could be better than this?'So He will give him that dwelling. Then another dwelling will be shown to him, or raised before him, as if it is a dream compared to the previous one.He will say, 'Give me that dwelling.'Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will say, 'Perhaps if I give it to you, you will ask for another?'He will say, 'No, by Your might, I will not ask You for any other. What dwelling could be better than this?'So He will give it to him and he will take up residence in it. Then he will fall silent.Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will say, 'Why do you not ask?'He will say, 'Lord, I have asked You until I am ashamed before You, and I have sworn oaths to You until I am ashamed before You.'Allah, the Exalted, will say, 'Are you not pleased that I should give you the like of the world from the day I created it until the day I destroy it, and ten times its like?'He will say, 'Are You mocking me, when You are the Lord of Glory?'"The Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, will laugh at his words. The narrator said, I noticed that whenever Abdullah bin Masud reached this point in this hadith, he would laugh.A man said to him, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, I have heard you narrate this hadith many times, and every time you reach this point, you laugh."He replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrate this hadith many times, and every time he reached this point in this hadith, he would laugh until his back teeth showed."He continued, "The Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, will say, 'No, but I am capable of that. Ask.'He will say, 'Join me with the people.'He will say, 'Join the people.'So he will set off, hastening through Paradise, and as he draws near to the people, a palace of pearl will be raised before him. He will fall down in prostration. He will be told, 'Raise your head. What is the matter with you?'He will say, 'I saw my Lord,' or 'My Lord appeared to me!'He will be told, 'It is only a dwelling among your dwellings.'Then he will meet a man and prepare to prostrate before him.He will be told, 'Stop! What is the matter with you?'He will say, 'I thought you were one of the angels.'The man will say, 'I am only one of your custodians, a servant from among your servants. Beneath my hand are a thousand stewards like myself.'So he will go ahead of him until the palace is opened for him. It is a hollowed pearl whose ceilings, doors, locks, and keys are all of it. A jewel meets him, a green jewel layered with red. Each jewel leads to another jewel of a different color. In each jewel are couches, spouses, and maidservants. The least of them is a wide-eyed houri wearing seventy garments, the marrow of whose leg can be seen through her garments. Her liver is his mirror and his liver is her mirror. When he turns aside from her, she increases in his eyes seventy times more than she was before. When she turns aside from him, he increases in her eyes seventy times more than he was before. He will say to her, 'By Allah, you have increased in my eyes seventy times!'She will say to him, 'And you, by Allah, have increased in my eyes seventy times!'He will be told, 'Look out.' So he will look out, and he will be told, 'Your kingdom extends a hundred years' journey, your sight reaches its end.'"Umar said, "Kaab, do you not hear what Ibn Umm Abd is telling us about the lowest in rank among the people of Paradise? Then how about the highest of them?"Kaab said, "Commander of the Believers, it is what no eye has seen and no ear has heard. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, made a dwelling and placed in it whatever He willed of spouses, fruits, and drinks. Then He sealed it, and none of His creation has seen it, neither Jibreel nor any other angel."Then Kaab recited, "And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for the eyes as a reward for what they used to do" [Sajdah 32:17].He said, "Below that He created two gardens and adorned them as He willed, and showed them to whom He willed of His creation."Then he said, "Whoever's record is in Illiyyun will dwell in that abode which no one has seen. Indeed, a man from the people of Illiyyun will set out and journey through his kingdom, and no tent of the tents of Paradise will remain but that the radiance of his face will enter it. They will rejoice at his fragrance and say, 'Ah, this fragrance! This is a man from the people of Illiyyun who has gone out to journey through his kingdom.'"Umar said, "Woe to you, Kaab! These hearts have been let loose and have overflowed."Kaab said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, on the Day of Resurrection there will be a roaring breath such that no angel brought near nor prophet sent will fail to fall upon his knees, until even Ibrahim, the friend of Allah, will say, 'Lord, myself, myself,' until if you had the deeds of seventy prophets added to your own deeds, you would think you would not be saved."
