When death approached him, he called for new clothes, put them on, and said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The deceased will be resurrected in the clothes in which he dies.'"
أنه لما حضره الموت دعا بثياب جدد، فلبسها، ثم قال: سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: إن الميت يبعث في ثيابه التي يموت فيها.
Abu Dawud (3114) narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (7316) and Hakim (1/340) both graded it sahih, all of them by way of Ibn Abu Maryam, who said, Yahya bin Ayub informed us, from Ibn Hadi (who is Yazid bin Abdullah bin Usama bin Hadi), from Muhammad bin Ibrahim Taymi, from Abu Salama (who is Ibn Abdul-Rahman), from Abu Saeed Khudri, who related it.Its chain is hasan because of Yahya bin Ayub, who is Ghafiqi Misri. There is disagreement about him, but his hadith is hasan unless the contrary becomes apparent. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs."The most likely meaning of this hadith is that when the prophets are clothed, and then those after them according to their ranks, each person's garment will be of the same kind as what he died in. Then, when they enter Paradise, they will wear the garments of Paradise. This is supported by the practice of Abu Saeed Khudri.
