The Prophet ﷺ fell behind us during a journey we were on. He caught up with us when we were running late for the afternoon prayer, so we began making wudu and wiping over our feet. He called out at the top of his voice, "Woe to the heels from the Fire," repeating it two or three times.
تخلف النبي ﷺ عنا في سفرة سافرناها، فأدركنا وقد أرهقنا العصر، فجعلنا نتوضأ ونمسح على أرجلنا، فنادى بأعلى صوته: ويل للأعقاب من النار مرتين أو ثلاثا.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Wudu (163), and this is his wording, and Muslim related it in the Book of Purification (241), both of them from Abu Awana, from Abu Bishr, from Yusuf bin Mahak, from Abdullah bin Amr, with this wording.In Muslim's version, it adds, "and the time of Asr prayer had come." In another version, he said, "We returned with the Messenger of Allah from Makkah to Madinah, and when we reached some water on the way, some people hurried at the time of Asr and performed wudu while rushing. We caught up with them and their heels were gleaming, untouched by water. The Messenger of Allah said, 'Woe to the heels from the Fire, complete your wudu.'"Its full documentation is given in Minna Kubra (1/154).
