It was narrated by Ahmad (15876) and Ibn Abu Shayba (38509), both from Yazid bin Harun, from Abu Malik Ashjai Saad bin Tariq, from his father, who related it.Regarding his statement, "Killing is sufficient for my companions," it means that my companions will not commit sins for which they would be punished in this world, such as retaliation, stoning, and the like. Rather, killing will occur among them because of military campaigns, jihad, and disputes among themselves. This indeed happened just as the Prophet ﷺ foretold.Something with a similar meaning was narrated from Saeed bin Zayd, who said, "We were with the Prophet ﷺ when he mentioned a period of turmoil and spoke of how serious it would be. We said, or they said, 'O Messenger of Allah, if we live to see this, we will surely perish.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Not at all, killing is sufficient for you.'" Saeed said, "I then saw my brothers being killed."This was narrated by Abu Dawud (4277) and Abu Yaala (948), both through the route of Abu Ahwas Salam bin Salim, who said, "Mansur related to us, from Hilal bin Yasaf, from Saeed bin Zayd," who related it.However, Hilal bin Yasaf did not hear this directly from Saeed bin Zayd. There are two men between them in this chain of transmission, as shown in the narration of Thawri. Nasai narrated it in Kubra (8149) through the route of Sufyan, from Mansur, from Hilal bin Yasaf, from a certain man called Ibn Hayan, from Abdullah bin Zalim, from Saeed bin Zayd, in a similar manner within a longer hadith. This man, the son of Hayan, is unknown, his identity is not established. This hadith has also been narrated through other routes, none of which are free of some defect.
