Abdullah bin Umar reported,

I came in upon Hafsa while her locks were still dripping with water. I said, "The affair of the people has come to what you see, yet nothing of the leadership has been given to me."She said, "Go join them, for they are waiting for you, and I fear that your holding back from them will cause division." She kept urging him until he went. When the people had gathered, Muawiya gave a sermon and said, "Whoever wishes to speak concerning this matter, let him raise his head and show himself to us, for we have more right to it than he and his father."Habib bin Maslama said, "Why did you not answer him?"Abdullah said, "I loosened my garment from around my knees and was about to say, 'More entitled to this matter than you is the one who fought you and your father over Islam.' But I feared that I might utter a word that would split the gathering, cause bloodshed, and be reported from me other than as I intended, so I remembered what Allah has prepared in the Gardens."

Sahih
