Abu Dharr reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode a donkey and seated me behind him. He said, "Abu Dharr, what would you do if the people were struck by such severe hunger that you could not rise from your bed to your mosque?"I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said, "Restrain yourself."He said, "Abu Dharr, what would you do if the people were struck by such a severe death that a house would be sold for a slave," meaning the grave, "how would you act?"I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said, "Be patient."He said, "Abu Dharr, what would you do if the people killed one another, until the stones of Zayt were submerged in blood, how would you act?"I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said, "Stay in your house and lock your door behind you."I said, "What if I am not left alone?"He said, "Then go to those you belong to and be with them."I said, "Shall I take up my weapon?"He said, "Then you would share with them in what they are doing. But if you fear that the gleam of the sword may startle you, throw the edge of your garment over your face, so that he bears his own sin and yours."
