Abdullah bin Umar came to Abdullah bin Mutee during the events of al-Harrah in the time of Yazid bin Muawiya.Abdullah bin Mutee said, "Place a cushion for Abu Abd al-Rahman."Abdullah bin Umar replied, "I have not come to sit with you. I have come to relate to you a hadith I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say. He said, 'Whoever withdraws his hand from obedience will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection with no excuse to offer, and whoever dies without a pledge of allegiance on his neck dies a death of pre-Islamic ignorance.'"
جاء عبد الله بن عمر إلى عبد الله بن مطيع حين كان من أمر الحرة ما كان زمن يزيد بن معاوية فقال: اطرحوا لأبي عبد الرحمن وسادة فقال: إني لم آتك لأجلس، أتيتك لأحدثك حديثا، سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقوله: من خلع يدا من طاعة لقي الله يوم القيامة لا حجة له، ومن مات وليس في عنقه بيعة مات ميتة جاهلية.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Leadership (1851:58), from Ubaydullah bin Muaz Anbari, [who said] my father narrated to us, [who said] Asim, who is Ibn Muhammad bin Zayd, narrated to us, from Zayd bin Muhammad, from Nafi, who said, and he related it.
