Huzaifa bin Yaman reported,
People used to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the good, but I used to ask him about the evil, fearing it might overtake me.I said, "Messenger of Allah, we were living in ignorance and evil, then Allah brought us this good. Will there be any evil after this good?"He said, "Yes."I asked, "And after that evil, will there be any good?"He said, "Yes, but it will be tainted."I asked, "What will taint it?"He said, "A people who follow a way other than my way and guide by other than my guidance. You will recognize some of what they do and reject other things."I asked, "And after that good, will there be any evil?"He said, "Yes, callers at the gates of Hell. Whoever responds to them will be cast into it."I said, "Messenger of Allah, describe them to us."He said, "Certainly. They will be a people of our own skin, speaking our own tongue."I asked, "Messenger of Allah, what do you advise me to do if that overtakes me?"He said, "Hold fast to the main body of the Muslims and their leader."I said, "But what if they have no main body and no leader?"He said, "Then withdraw from all those factions, even if you must bite onto the root of a tree until death overtakes you while you are in that state."

كان الناس يسألون رسول الله ﷺ عن الخير، وكنت أسأله عن الشر مخافة أن يدركني فقلت: يا رسول الله إنا كنا في جاهلية وشر، فجاءنا الله بهذا الخير، فهل بعد هذا الخير شر؟ قال: نعم فقلت: هل بعد ذلك الشر من خير؟ قال: نعم وفيه دخن قلت: وما دخنه؟ قال: قوم يستنون بغير سنتي، ويهدون بغير هديي تعرف منهم وتنكر فقلت: هل بعد ذلك الخير من شر؟ قال: نعم دعاة على أبواب جهنم من أجابهم إليها قذفوه فيها فقلت: يا رسول الله صفهم لنا قال: نعم قوم من جلدتنا، ويتكلمون بألسنتنا قلت: يا رسول الله! فما ترى إن أدركني ذلك قال: تلزم جماعة المسلمين وإمامهم فقلت: فإن لم تكن لهم جماعة ولا إمام؟ قال: فاعتزل تلك الفرق كلها، ولو أن تعض على أصل شجرة حتى يدركك الموت، وأنت على ذلك.
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Tribulations (7084), and Muslim in the Book of Leadership (1847), both through the route of Muhammad bin Muthanna, who said, Abu Walid bin Muslim narrated to us, Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir narrated to us, Busr bin Ubaydullah Hadrami narrated to me, that he heard Abu Idris Khawlani say, I heard Huzaifa bin Yaman say, and then he mentioned it.The scholars have offered several interpretations of this hadith of Huzaifa's, the best of which is as follows. His saying, "good," refers to the era of the Prophet ﷺ and the Rightly Guided Caliphs, extending through the caliphate of Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan. His saying, "after this good there will be evil," alludes to the aftermath of the killing of the Rightly Guided Caliph Uthman bin Affan 
, and the events that followed from it. Then the "good" refers to the caliphate of Umar bin Abdul-Aziz bin Marwan and what came after it.His saying, "Will there be evil after that good, He said, Yes, callers at the gates of Hell," refers to the people of innovation and misguidance. His saying, "they are of our own skin," means that they are affiliated with Islam, like the Khawarij, the Rawafid, the Qaramitah, and others. Good and evil have continued in this way up to our own day, present in one state while absent in another, and this will continue until the Day of Judgment.His saying, "and if they have neither a community nor an imam," did in fact come to pass. Muawiya bin Yazid bin Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan was given the pledge of allegiance on the fourteenth of Rabi Awwal in the year 64 AH, and he remained in the caliphate for twenty days, as it is said, before he died at the age of twenty-one, having appointed no successor. The people of Syria remained afterward without an imam for the rest of Rabi Thani, which is twenty-five days, then two months of Jumada, then some days of Rajab, that is, about ten days of that year. This amounts to 25 plus 60 plus 10, which is 95, that is, approximately ninety-five days, until the people of Syria gave their pledge of allegiance to Marwan bin Hakam in Damascus, which was at that time the capital of the Islamic state.
