The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No people went astray after being rightly guided except that they were given to argumentation." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited this verse, "They did not present it to you except for argument. Rather, they are a contentious people" [Zukhruf 43:58].
قال رسول الله ﷺ: ما ضل قوم بعد هدى كانوا عليه إلا أوتوا الجدل، ثم تلا رسول الله ﷺ هذه الآية: {ما ضربوه لك إلا جدلا بل هم قوم خصمون} [سورة الزخرف: ٥٨].
Tirmidhi (3253), Ibn Majah (48), and Hakim (2/448) all narrated it through the route of Hajjaj bin Dinar, from Abu Ghalib, from Abu Hurairah, who mentioned it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith." Its chain is hasan because of Abu Ghalib, whose name is Hazwar, with a fatha on the ha and the za, and a doubled waw, about whom there is disagreement, though his hadith is hasan.
