The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed the people during the Farewell Pilgrimage and said, "Satan has despaired of ever being worshipped in your land, but he is content to be obeyed in matters you consider insignificant among your deeds, so beware, people. I have left among you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray, the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet. Every Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. Muslims are brothers. It is not lawful for anyone to take from his brother's wealth except what is given willingly. Do not wrong one another, and do not return after me to disbelief, striking one another's necks."
Reported by Hakim (1/93) through several routes, from Ismail bin Abu Uways, who said, my father told me, from Thawr bin Zayd Deeli, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Ismail bin Abu Uways and his father. Hakim said, Bukhari relied on the hadiths of Ikrima as evidence, and Muslim relied on Abu Uways as evidence, and the rest of its narrators are agreed upon, and this hadith is the sermon of the Prophet ﷺ which is agreed to have been included in the Sahih, "O people, I have left among you something after which you will never go astray as long as you hold fast to it, the Book of Allah, and you will be asked about me, so what will you say?" The mention of holding fast to the sunnah in this sermon is unusual and needs further examination. End of quote. He means by this the hadith of Jabir describing the pilgrimage sermon of the Prophet ﷺ, as will follow.Hakim then mentioned a corroborating report from the hadith of Abu Hurairah, which was narrated from him as a raised report with the wording, "I have left among you two things after which you will never go astray, the Book of Allah and my sunnah, and they will never separate until they both come to me at the Pool." This was reported by Hakim (1/93), and by Ibn Abdul-Barr in Tamheed (24/331), both from the hadith of Dawud bin Amr Dabbi, who said, Salih bin Musa Talhi told us, from Abdul-Aziz bin Rafi, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it. The wording given is that of Hakim. In its chain of transmission is Salih bin Musa Talhi, who is daif according to the majority of scholars. Ibn Adi said, "Most of what he narrates is not corroborated by anyone else. In my view he is not the type who deliberately lies, but he becomes confused and makes mistakes, and most of what he narrates from his grandfather concerning virtues is not corroborated by anyone else." End of quote.Something similar was also reported from the hadith of Amr bin Awf, recorded by Ibn Abdul-Barr in Tamheed (24/331), and in its chain of transmission is Kathir bin Abdullah bin Amr bin Awf, whom Ahmad, Nasai, Ibn Main, and others judged daif. These hadiths, taken together, strengthen what Malik reported as a balagh, and this same meaning also occurs in the hadith of Abu Umama which follows.
