The Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up one morning looking troubled. Maymunah said, "Messenger of Allah, I have noticed a change in your appearance today."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Jibreel had promised to meet me last night, but he did not come. By Allah, he has never broken a promise to me before."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained in that state throughout the day. Then he noticed a puppy under a tent of ours. He ordered it removed, then took some water in his hand and sprinkled the spot where it had been. When evening came, Jibreel met him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "You had promised to meet me last night."Jibreel replied, "Yes, but we do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image."The next morning, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that dogs be killed, to the point that he ordered the killing of the dog kept for guarding a small garden, while sparing the dog kept for guarding a large garden.
أن رسول الله ﷺ أصبح يوما واجما، فقالت ميمونة: يا رسول الله، لقد استنكرت هيئتك منذ اليوم، قال رسول الله ﷺ: إن جبريل كان وعدني أن يلقاني الليلة فلم يلقني، أم والله ما أخلفني، قال: فظل رسول الله ﷺ يومه ذلك على ذلك، ثم وقع في جرو كلب تحت فسطاط لنا، فأمر به فأخرج، ثم أخذ بيده ماء فنضح مكانه، فلما أمسى لقيه جبريل، فقال له: قد كنت وعدتني أن تلقاني البارحة، قال: أجل، ولكنا لا ندخل بيتا فيه كلب ولا صورة، فأصبح رسول الله ﷺ يومئذ فأمر بقتل الكلاب، حتى إنه يأمر بقتل كلب الحائط الصغير، ويترك كلب الحائط الكبير.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Clothing and Adornment (2105), from Harmala bin Yahya, who said, Ibn Wahb informed us, Yunus informed me, from Ibn Shihab, from Ibn Sibaq, that Abdullah bin Abbas said, Maymuna informed me, and he related it.His saying, "the hait" means the orchard of palm trees, so named because it is walled around for protection.And his saying, "the killing of the small dog of the hait" is because its owner protects and guards it, unlike the large orchard.
