A robe of fine silk brocade was given as a gift to the Prophet ﷺ, though he used to forbid the wearing of silk. The people marveled at it, so he said, "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the handkerchiefs of Saad bin Muaz in Paradise are finer than this."
أهدي للنبي ﷺ جبة سندس، وكان ينهى عن الحرير، فعجب الناس منها، فقال: والذي نفس محمد بيده، لمناديل سعد بن معاذ في الجنة أحسن من هذا.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Gifts (2615), and Muslim in the Book of Virtues (2469), both from the hadith of Yunus bin Muhammad, who said, our teacher told us Shayban, from Qatada, our teacher told us Anas, and he related it.Muslim also narrated it through another route, from Umar bin Amir, from Qatada, from Anas, that Ukaydir of Dumat Jandal presented the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a robe, and he related something similar, but did not mention in it, "and he used to forbid silk."Ahmad narrated it (13938) from Abu Dawud, who said, Shuba informed us, from Qatada, from Anas, and it contains, "so they began touching it and looking at it."Regarding the statement "and he used to forbid silk," Bayhaqi said (3/274), "before he forbade silk" is closer to being sahih than the version narrated as "and he used to forbid silk." And it is as he said. This is because Bukhari mentioned after it, in a suspended form (2616), the hadith of Saeed bin Abu Aruba from Qatada from Anas, but he did not give its wording in full. Yet when we look at its wording, we find that it says, "before he forbade it," just as in the hadith that follows, and likewise the hadith after that.
