A silk garment was gifted to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he put it on and prayed in it. When he finished, he pulled it off forcefully, as though he disliked it, and said, "This is not fitting for those who are mindful of Allah."
أهدي لرسول الله ﷺ فروج حرير فلبسه، ثم صلى فيه، ثم انصرف، فنزعه نزعا شديدا، كالكاره له، ثم قال: لا ينبغي هذا للمتقين.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Clothing (5801), and Muslim in the Book of Clothing (2075), both from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Abu Khayr, from Uqba bin Amir, who related it.This hadith shows that wearing silk was permissible for men, which is why the Prophet ﷺ wore it and prayed in it, and that the prohibition against wearing it came after it had been permitted. This is what the hadiths in this chapter indicate.
