The Prophet ﷺ said, "There are three whom the angels do not approach, the one in a state of major ritual impurity, the drunkard, and the one smeared with khaluq perfume."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: ثلاثة لا تقربهم الملائكة: الجنب، والسكران، والمتضمخ بالخلوق.
Bazzar narrated it in Kashf Astar (2930) from Abbas bin Abu Talib, who said, Abu Salama narrated to us, who said, Aban - meaning Ibn Yazid - narrated to us, from Qatada, from Ibn Burayda, from Yahya bin Yamar, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it.Bazzar said, "Others besides Abbas bin Abu Talib narrated it as a mursal report, and we do not know it to be narrated from Ibn Abbas except through this route, and something similar was narrated from Ammar."I say, its chain is hasan because of Abbas bin Abu Talib, who is Abbas bin Jafar bin Abdullah bin Zubarqan Baghdadi, Abu Muhammad, Ibn Abu Talib, whose hadith is hasan. Abu Hatim said, "Trustworthy." Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the reliable narrators, and he is among the narrators found in Tahdhib, so it does no harm that someone else disagreed with this. In fact, Bukhari mentioned him in Tarikh (5/74), saying, "Hafs bin Umar said, Abu Awana narrated to us, from Qatada, from Ibn Burayda, from Yahya bin Yamar, from Ibn Abbas, similarly." His statement "similarly" means "similarly as a raised (marfu) report," because it is connected to Burayda's report as a marfu report. However, Burayda's report is not sound, and this is what Bukhari narrated in the place referenced above, and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (2929), and Aqeeli in Duafa (794), and Ibn Adi in Kamil (4/1456), all of them from the report of Abdullah bin Hakeem, Abu Bakr Dahiri, who said, Yusuf bin Suhayb narrated to us, from Abdullah bin Burayda, from his father, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Three whom the angels do not approach, a drunkard, one who has perfumed himself, and one in a state of major ritual impurity or a menstruating woman," as it appears in some narrations.Bukhari said, "It is not sound." Aqeeli said, "This Abu Bakr narrates hadiths that have no basis, and he attributes them to reliable narrators." And it was transmitted from Yahya that he said, "His hadith is worth nothing." Ibn Adi said, "His hadith is rejected."Haythami mentioned it in Majma (5/156) and said about him, "Abdullah bin Hakeem is daif."I say, some scholars have accused him.Likewise, what was narrated from Ammar is not sound. He said, "I came to my family at night, and my hands had cracked, so they smeared me with saffron. Then I went early to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and greeted him, but he did not return my greeting nor welcome me. He said, 'Wash this off.'" He said, "So I went and washed it off, then I came back, but some of it remained on me, so I greeted him, but he did not return my greeting nor welcome me. He said, 'Wash this off yourself.' So I went and washed it off, then I came back and greeted him, and he returned my greeting and welcomed me, and said, 'The angels do not attend the funeral of a disbeliever, nor one smeared with saffron, nor one in a state of major ritual impurity.'" And he permitted one in a state of major ritual impurity, if he wished to sleep, eat, or drink, to perform ablution.Ahmad (18886), Abu Dawud (4176), and Tirmidhi (613) narrated it in abbreviated form, all of them from Ata Khurasani, from Yahya bin Yamar, from Ammar, and he mentioned it. The wording is Ahmad's.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith." He said this even though it contains a disconnection, for Yahya bin Yamar never met Ammar bin Yasir. Abu Dawud (225) said, "Between Yahya bin Yamar and Ammar bin Yasir in this hadith there is a man."I say, it is as he said, for Abu Dawud (4177) and Ahmad (18890) narrated it from the report of Ibn Jurayj, who said, Umar bin Ata bin Abu Khuwar informed me that he heard Yahya bin Yamar reporting from a man who told him from Ammar bin Yasir - Umar claimed that Yahya had named that man but Umar forgot it - that Ammar said, and he mentioned something similar. Its chain is daif because the man who reported from Ammar bin Yasir is unnamed.Abu Dawud (4180) also narrated it from Harun bin Abdullah, who said, Abdul-Aziz bin Abdullah Uwaysi narrated to us, who said, Sulayman bin Bilal narrated to us, from Thawr bin Zayd, from Hasan bin Abu Hasan, from Ammar bin Yasir, and he mentioned it in abbreviated form. This too is daif, for Hasan is a mudallis and did not hear from Ammar bin Yasir.Likewise, what was narrated from Abu Musa is not sound. He said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah, the Exalted, does not accept the prayer of a man who has any perfume on his body." Its chain is daif. Abu Dawud (4178) and Ahmad (19613) both narrated it from the report of Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Harb Asadi, who said, Abu Jafar Razi narrated to us, from Rabi bin Anas, from his two grandfathers, who said, "We heard Abu Musa," and he mentioned the hadith. Rabi's two grandfathers are unknown.Abu Jafar is Isa bin Abu Isa Abdullah bin Mahan, and there is disagreement about him, except that his hadith is hasan when he does not err.
