The Prophet ﷺ said, "What an excellent young man Samura is, if only he would trim his hair and shorten his lower garment." So Samura did just that, trimming his hair and shortening his lower garment.
أن النبي ﷺ قال: نعم الفتى سمرة، لو أخذ من لمته، وشمر من مئزره. ففعل ذلك سمرة، أخذ من لمته، وشمر من مئزره.
Ahmad narrated it (17788) from Yamar bin Bishr, who said, "Hushaym narrated to us from Dawud bin Amr, from Busr bin Ubaydullah, from Samura bin Fatik," and he mentioned it.Its chain of transmission is hasan, because of Yamar bin Bishr, a teacher of Ahmad, about whom Ahmad said, "There is no harm in him," and Daraqutni deemed him trustworthy, as mentioned in Tarikh Baghdad (14/357). Abdullah here is Ibn Mubarak, and the hadith appears in his book al-Jihad (109). A similar report was narrated from his brother Khuraym bin Fatik, as will be seen in the following hadith.His saying "the lamma" refers to hair extending past the earlobe. His saying "shammir" means "shorten."Samura bin Fatik and his brother Khuraym bin Fatik embraced Islam after the conquest, and there is disagreement about their lineage, though it is said they were from Asad, which is the more correct view.
