I spent a night at the home of my maternal aunt Maymuna bint Harith, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with her that night. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up to pray during the night, so I stood on his left. He took hold of my forelock and moved me to his right.
بت ليلة عند ميمونة بنت الحارث خالتي، وكان رسول الله ﷺ عندها في ليلتها، قال: فقام رسول الله ﷺ يصلي من الليل، فقمت عن يساره. قال: فأخذ بذؤابتي فجعلني عن يمينه.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Clothing (5919) via Hushaym (that is, Ibn Bashir), from Abu Bishr (that is, Jafar bin Abu Wahshiya), from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it.Muslim also narrated it in the Book of the Prayer of Travelers (763) through other routes from Ibn Abbas with similar wording, without mentioning the forelock, and in some versions it reads, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his right hand on my head and took hold of my right ear, twisting it."Regarding his statement, "He took hold of my forelock," Hafiz said that this shows ﷺ approving of keeping a forelock.
