He saw Muhammad al-Qurashi walking while letting his lower garment drag along the ground. Hubayb looked at him and said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever trails his garment out of arrogance will tread with it in the Fire.'"
أنه رأى محمدا القرشي قام يجر إزاره، فنظر إليه هبيب فقال: سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: من وطئه خيلاء وطئه في النار.
Narrated by Ahmad (15605) and Abu Yaala (1542), both from the hadith of Harun bin Maruf, who said, Ibn Wahb, meaning Abdullah bin Wahb Misri, narrated to us, Amr bin Harith narrated to us, from Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Aslam bin Abu Imran, from Habib bin Mughaffal, and he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. His words "trod on it" mean he trod on his lower garment.In the same vein is what was reported from Anas bin Malik, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "While a man from among those who came before you was going out wearing two cloaks, walking proudly in them, Allah commanded the earth, and it seized him, and he will keep sinking into it until the Day of Resurrection."This was narrated by Abu Yaala (4302) from Abu Khaythama, who said, Mualla bin Mansur narrated to us, Muhammad bin Muslim informed me, saying, I heard Ziyad Numayri relating, from Anas bin Malik, and he related it.Ziyad Numayri is Ziyad bin Abdullah Basri, who is daif. Ibn Main declared him daif in one report, but in another place said, "There is no harm in him." Abu Dawud also declared him daif. Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the daif narrators and said, "His hadith is objectionable, he relates things from Anas that do not resemble the hadith of reliable narrators." Yet he also mentioned him among the reliable narrators, saying, "He makes mistakes." Haythami also faulted him on this basis in al-Majma (5/126).
