I used to suffer from severe and heavy menstrual bleeding, so I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to seek his ruling and inform him about it. I found him at the house of my sister Zaynab bint Jahsh.I said, "Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who suffers from heavy and severe bleeding. What do you advise concerning it? It has prevented me from praying and fasting."He said, "I prescribe for you cotton, for it absorbs the blood."She said, "It is more than that."He said, "Then use a cloth."She said, "It is more than that. I bleed in heavy gushes."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I will instruct you with two matters. Whichever of them you do will be sufficient for you in place of the other, and if you are strong enough for both, then you know best."He said to her, "This is only one of the strikes of Satan. So consider yourself menstruating for six or seven days, as Allah knows, then wash yourself. Once you see that you have become pure and clean, then pray for twenty-three or twenty-four nights and their days, and fast, for that will suffice you. Do this every month, just as women menstruate and become pure according to the timing of their menstruation and purification. If you are strong enough to delay the Zuhr prayer and hasten the Asr prayer, then bathe and combine the two prayers, Zuhr and Asr, and delay the Maghrib prayer and hasten the Isha prayer, then bathe and combine the two prayers, then do so. And bathe at dawn, then do so, and fast if you are able."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is the more pleasing of the two matters to me."
Abu Dawud (287), Tirmidhi (128), and Ibn Majah (622, 627) all related it via the hadith of Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, from Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Talha, from his uncle Imran bin Talha, from his mother Hamna bint Jahsh, who narrated it, and the wording given here is Abu Dawud's. Others abridged it, and Ibn Majah attributed it to Umm Habiba bint Jahsh instead. Its wording is, she said, "I used to suffer from prolonged, heavy abnormal bleeding." She said, "So I came to the Prophet to seek his ruling and inform him." She said, "I found him with my sister Zaynab." She said, "I said, 'Messenger of Allah, I have a matter I need to raise with you.'" He said, "What is it, my dear?" I said, "I suffer from prolonged, heavy abnormal bleeding, and it has kept me from prayer and fasting. What do you command me to do about it?" He said, "I prescribe cotton wool for you, for it stops the blood." I said, "It is heavier than that." Then he went on to say something similar to the hadith of Sharik. End of quotation.I say, the hadith of Sharik to which Ibn Majah referred is one he himself related (number 625). He said, Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba and Ismail bin Musa told us, they said, Sharik told us, from Abu Yaqzan, from Adi bin Thabit, from his father, from his grandfather, from the Prophet
, who said, "The woman with abnormal bleeding leaves off prayer during the days of her usual monthly period, then she performs a full ritual bath and performs ablution for every prayer, and she fasts and prays." Its chain is daif because of the weakness of Sharik and his teacher Abu Yaqzan. It will be mentioned again at the end of a chapter in the Book of Menstruation. As for "hentah," Jawhari said this word is used specifically as a form of address. And "kursuf" means cotton.Tirmidhi said about the hadith of Hamna, "hasan sahih." I say, the correct view is that it is hasan only, for there is disagreement about Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel. Yahya bin Main declared him daif, while Ajli deemed him trustworthy, saying, "A Madinan successor whose hadith is acceptable." Al-Hafiz placed him in the rank of "truthful, though there is some laxity in his hadith, and it is said that he declined in his later years."When Ibn Manda said, "The hadith of Hamna is not sahih to them in any respect, because it comes through the narration of Ibn Aqeel, and they have agreed to set aside his hadith," Ibn Turkmani responded to him, saying, "Know that this statement from Ibn Manda is strange, for Ahmad, Ishaq, and Humaydi used to cite his hadith as evidence, Bukhari graded his hadith hasan, and Ibn Hanbal and Tirmidhi graded it sahih as mentioned before. We have already noted that Tirmidhi graded sahih another hadith in the chapters on inheritance shares and also graded it hasan, and its chain contains Ibn Aqeel." Jawhar Naqi (1:339).But Bukhari doubted whether Ibn Aqeel heard from Ibrahim, so Ibn Turkmani answered that Ibn Aqeel heard from Ibn Umar, Jabir, Anas, and others, who are peers of Ibrahim's own teachers, so how could his hearing from him be denied? End of quotation. For more, see Minna Kubra (1:227-229).As for his saying, "a kick from the kicks of Satan," Khattabi said, "The basic meaning of 'kicking' is striking with the foot and hitting with it, meaning by it harm and corruption, just as a riding beast kicks and strikes with its foot. Its meaning, and Allah knows best, is that Satan found through this a way to confuse her regarding the matter of her religion, at the time of her purity and her prayer, until he made her forget that, so it is, figuratively speaking, as though it were a kick that struck her among his kicks. Attributing forgetfulness here to the action of Satan is like what occurs in His saying, exalted is He, "So Satan made him forget the remembrance of his Lord" [Yusuf 12:42], and like the saying of the Prophet
, 'If Satan makes me forget something of my prayer, then glorify Allah,' or words to that effect, meaning, if confusion befalls me."
